Factory Weather developed through two residencies exploring the historical and material links between Pakistan and Lancashire, the first in Islamabad and the second in Lahore. The research began with the footballs produced in Sialkot following the founding of the Football League, and with the colonial economy of the late nineteenth century that shaped that trade.
Holman’s response takes the form of a translation of William Morris’s The Tale of King Florus and the Fair Jehane (1858). Using the poem as a framework, the narrative is re-situated across Lancashire and Lahore and functions as a set of prompts for generating new images, gathered into a publication bound in Lahore by Ubaid Tariq. The work was commissioned for the first edition of the NCA Triennale, marking the 150th anniversary of the National College of Arts.
