A solo exhibition of new painting, ceramic, textile, audio and moving image, tracing the expression of governance and state violence across industry, working-class life and protest. The Destriers series locates that violence in public and domestic space alike, working through crowd theory and police control strategies as part of an English inheritance that first appears in the Bayeux Tapestry.
Holman is concerned throughout with the everyday banality of violence. The works are bleak in their relentless account of state power and, at the same time, hopeful in the resistance of ordinary people under extraordinary circumstances.
